East Bugs are more commonly refered to as house centipedes. At Brandeis University, they are called East Bugs because they are especially prevalent in East Quad, especially on the lower floors.

Despite the fact that this critter—which is mostly harmless to humans&mdashfeeds on other insects (such as cockroaches, and presumably even ants, both of which are also common pests in East Quad), it is feared and often brutally murdered because of its outward appearance, showing just how much even open-minded college students can judge based on outward appearance.
